Remedial Massage
Everyone knows about the benefits of remedial massage, but you might only think of Remedial Massage as a firm pressure therapy that really digs in to the muscle to get results. While this is often an effective way to get relief from muscle and joint pain, the ‘No Pain, No Gain’ approach isn’t the only form of remedial massage therapy and can be detrimental to someone living with chronic health conditions or illness.
The intention of Remedial Massage is to reduce muscle and joint pain, improve range of motion and increase the release of endorphins which reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. When you are living with Lymphoedema, Lipoedema, Cancer, Chronic Stress, Fibromyalgia or other life limiting illnesses, the deep tissue or deep pressure technique can increase tissue inflammation and therefore the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and norepinephrine in the tissue and body. This can leave you feeling wiped out and in pain for days after your therapy.
Effective Remedial Massage Therapy is about adapting the treatment to the client’s needs and adjusting the pressure, style and treatment options accordingly and considering the impact of the treatment on each individual. We want to improve and increase blood circulation through congested areas to increase the delivery of oxygen and nutrients, and to encourage cell regeneration and tissue repair.
